Lean-Six Sigma Co-Op: Fall 2025
We are looking for an intern interested in applying and growing his/her engineering skills. The intern will be trained in industry, high demand Lean-Six-Sigma skills. These skills are used in numerous areas including manufacturing, healthcare, IT, finance, sales, and marketing. Engineering student candidates pursuing BS and MS degrees in Mechanical, Electrical, Chemical, Petroleum, Polymer, Corrosion, Industrial, Packaging, Biological, Biomedical, Nuclear, Aerospace, Aeronautical, Computer, Automotive, Material Science and Welding Engineering will be considered for the position.
The training will allow the intern to apply these new skills with hands-on projects. These projects could include implementation of pull-based market production systems, new process/equipment development for media blasting, and process streamlining of fabricating electrodes. The Intern will manage mini projects that require data collection and analysis, development & recommendation of solutions, implementation of solutions, and final a presentation of the project(s). Be prepared to use small hand/power tools and engage with employees on the floor to complete projects.
Dates: Fall 2025 and/or Spring 2026
Responsibilities:
The intern will be trained and or exposed to projects that include the following tools:
- 5S – the starting point of the lean processes
- 8 Waste- Identify the 8 waste and develop ways to remove them from the process
- Value stream mapping – used to identify and improve production and supply chain losses
- Process mapping – Used to identify process breakdowns
- Kaizen- Quick change events
- SQDC – Used in planning and communication
- Standard Work- Used in building or maintaining a product or machine
- TPM- Used in preventing unscheduled downtime in production
- SPF- Single piece flow vs batch production (Lego Exercise)
- PDCA – Used for project organization and implementation
- SMED – Used to expedite production change overs
- Learn and apply root cause analysis (solving techniques) such as:
- PDCA (Plan, Do Check and Act)
- RCCM (root Cause Countermeasure)
- Ishikawa Diagram (fishbone diagram)
- Brainstorming
- 5Why?
- 8D
