Essential Functions

 

Essential Functions

  • Review engineering plans and specs.
  • Develop engineering work scopes.
  • Attends meetings to review construction projects.
  • Assists with resident concerns.
  • Performs engineering design under the responsibility of a licensed engineer.
  • Develop engineering studies based on the needs of the department.
  • Function as an assistant project manager on project(s).

RELATED TASKS:

  • Drafts correspondence including staff comments and other materials.
  • Coordinates with other government agencies and consultants.
  • Coordinates with other City departments and the public.
  • Performs technical and field studies.
  • Performs related tasks as directed.

EXPECTATIONS:

Candidates selected for an internship will be expected to comply with all City and Department rules and regulations. 

In addition, candidates will be expected to:

  • Complete the required amount of hours in accordance with the college/university requirements.
  • Wear proper attire while engaged in Intern activities.
  • Conduct him/herself in a professional manner.
  • Maintain the confidentiality of any information obtained through the Internship Program.
  • Ensure that all required documentation required by the college/university is supplied to the Department Internship Coordinator.

  • Follow directions promptly and receive feedback.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with City officials, supervisors, associates, applicants, and the public.
  • Interact with citizens effectively and contribute to maintaining a safe environment.
  • Identify small details, correct errors, and notice patterns.

 

Minimum and Preferred Qualifications

 

Candidates seeking to be considered for an internship in Public Works and Engineering must meet or comply with the following requirements:

  • Currently enrolled in or will be entering their junior year or higher at an Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) accredited college or University.
  • Has obtained and maintained a minimum 3.0 GPA.
  • Ability to work between 12 hours (minimum) and 40 hours (maximum) per week for a summer only (3 month) internship OR ability to work up to 25 hours per week (maximum) for an extended 6 to 12 month internship.  Work schedule is typically between the hours of 7:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday thru Friday.
  • A desire to pursue a career in municipal government.

REQUIREMENTS (TO BE SUBMITTED WITH THE APPLICATION):

  • 500-word Essay with application - "Why I want to Intern at the City of Boca Raton," including details about your education, experience, or interest in the Public Works & Engineering Department.
  • Unofficial transcript from a state-accredited college or university where you are currently enrolled.

PROGRAM TERM:
The Public Works & Engineering Department accepts Interns during each college semester. 

AVAILABLE POSITIONS:
The Public Works and Engineering Department has one (1) internship position available per college semester.

Physical and Environmental Demands and Conditions

  • Occasionally working in an area that is somewhat uncomfortable due to drafts, noise, temperature variation, or the like.
  • Occasionally working with equipment or performing procedures where carelessness would probably result in minor cuts, bruises, or muscle pulls.
  • Continuously demonstrating regular in-office attendance.

Essential Employee Designation

When normal operations of City departments are suspended or interrupted due to a declaration that a state of emergency exists, any employee may be deemed essential by the City. For the preparation and/or continuation of emergency operations or for special work detail, employees deemed necessary shall be required to work.
