Research and Development Engineer

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned. 

  • Provides support to engineers in various engine, fuel cell, and battery electric research and development assignments and projects
  • Perform simulation model setup, data processing, generation of plots and animations, data analysis, and presentation – in Converge, GT Power, or similar software package
  • Conducts engine and/or fuel cell tests in a laboratory environment and collects data for analysis
  • Monitors engine and/or fuel cell performance metrics, analyzes how they relate to design and operation, and identifies potential improvements via design and operation changes
  • Assists in creating test plans and reporting utilizing Design of Experiments
  • Implements and modifies test cell features to assist with high accuracy engine test data acquisition
  • Ensures that the raw data sets taken from R&D laboratory projects have all necessary parameters needed for subsequent calculations 
  • Checks that the performance and emissions calculations applied to raw test data are appropriate, are correct, and are being completed efficiently
  • Leverages latest techniques in data collection, data analysis, model development and running scenarios to research trends and identify patterns 
  • Designs, develops, implements, and validates test methods for troubleshooting products in order to catch failures, ensure the quality of the product
  • Makes use of statistical tools when working with large data sets to perform analysis and reporting on various projects 
  • Ensures the appropriate methodology, measurements, tools and quantitative techniques (e.g. data collection, computer simulation, statistics, etc.) are applied in projects
  • Relates all performance and emissions trends back to core thermodynamic and chemistry fundamentals in order to determine plausibility
  • Applies engineering principles, lean processes and analytical techniques to establish and continuously improve processes and products 
  • Recommends ideas to achieve best practices, apply new tools and techniques to find faster, smarter ways of looking at the data to perform exploratory analysis to improve decision making process
  • Subsequent to the reduction and analysis of the data and completion of analysis and design tasks, the employee will be expected to relay and explain the results to the project engineer or supervisor overseeing the work he or she has been tasked with. The employee will also be expected to occasionally liaise with suppliers.

 

 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Ideal candidate would possess an undergraduate degree in Engineering, and is currently enrolled in a graduate degree in Engineering from an accredited university
  • Proven track record of achievements both academically and professionally, cumulative GPA of 3.2 or above
  • Laboratory setup and operation experience is a plus
  • Fundamental controls experience is a plus
  • Working knowledge of engine combustion and emissions fundamentals, and fuel cell operation is a plus
  • Demonstrates strong verbal and written communication skills, with an ability to effectively communicate with all levels of the organization and effectively present information
  • Desire to work in hands-on lab and applied research environment
  • Excellent organization skills
  • Experience in an engine test cell through lab or research work is a plus
  • Strong mathematical background and understanding of statistics, deterministic optimization and simulation modeling techniques is required for data interpretation, manipulation and optimization.
  • Excellent at MS Office applications and willingness and quick adaptability to learn new software 
  • Working knowledge of Matlab, Minitab, SolidWorks, other analytical, statistical and simulation tools is a plus
  • Proven ability in working collaboratively across cross-functional and multi-national teams in all organizational levels and delivering results under tight deadlines and fast-paced environment 
  • Excellent track record for data analysis and result interpretation while monitoring variances, identifying trends and recommending actions to management when required
  • Excellent cognitive thinking, strong troubleshooting and problem solving skills with keen attention to detail
  • Ability to show strong project management skills; demonstrate ability to strategize, prioritize and work on multiple tasks and meet timelines
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations
